It is not my intention to prove or disprove these claims but only to draw the reader’s attention to the best health drink provided by nature which is water.

Some health professionals say that most of the people nowadays are dehydrated and they are not aware of it.  People are more interested in drinking coffee, tea and sodas which also contains caffeine.  About 83 percent of our blood is made of water.  Muscles are made of 75 percent water, while bone is 22 percent composed of water.  

Actually, an average person who weighs around 150lbs. contains 40 to 50 quarts of water. That makes 2/3 of our body weight is from water.

Drinking water also retains the fluids necessary for the body to function.  When the body gets less water, it begins to hold on to each drop of fluid and water it has.  Water is stored outside the cells making feet, legs and hands to swell.  To overcome this problem, the best thing to do is to drink plenty of water. The stored water outside the cells will be released.

Aside from being completely necessary for biological processes, drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water a day will definitely give you significant health improvements. It would improve your energy, increase mental and physical performance, remove toxins and other waste products from the body.

Even if there are people promoting alkaline water, there are still other health care professionals who think that we should just stick to regular, plain water. Whether it is alkaline water or normal water, we could not deny that it is one of the wonders of Mother Nature.

Health professionals recommend a glass of water upon rising followed by at least 6 to 8 glasses throughout the day, in small quantities, preferably between meals.

Vegetarianism for Weight Loss ?

There’s a tendency nowadays for people to put on weight. The reasons could be a sedentary lifestyle, wrong choice of foods, etc. Whatever the reason, people who are overweight are looking for ways to solve the problem. Some are turning to vegetarianism to control their weight.

So will a vegetarian diet provide all the nutrients that you would get from a non-vegetarian diet ?

Vegetarians have to pay strict attention to their diet so that they don’t lack any essential nutrients. If you do not include any dairy or eggs in your diet, you will need a good source of vitamin B12 which is found only in animal products and fortified foods (soymilk and nutritional yeast are two good plant-based sources, as well as fortified cereals).

Vegetarians may tend to eat a lot of grains, especially processed white flour which can lead to weight gain and defeat the very purpose of switching to vegetarianism.
If you are a strict vegetarian, you have to be careful when eating at restaurants as many of them often cook vegetables in animal stock such as beef and chicken stock. Before ordering a vegetarian dish, you would need to ask how it is prepared.

Breakfast – Why we should never skip it

As the saying goes, eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Queen or Prince and dinner like a pauper. Some people say Queen and others say Prince and here, we are interested only in the person who eats less at lunch than at breakfast.

 So who eats less at lunch ? A Queen or a Prince ? As there are very few of these dignitaries around nowadays, it’s difficult to find either to get an answer !

 Anyway, the message is that we should never skip breakfast. The word “breakfast” itself explains that we are breaking a fast which means that our body hasn’t received any nutrition for over 8 hours while we were asleep.

                         

When you get up in the morning, your glucose or blood sugar level is at its lowest point in the day. Glucose is the basic fuel for the brain and central nervous system. A good breakfast will keep you from being tired and irritable by mid-morning.

Whether you are an adult or a child, your body needs nutrition for physical and mental activities. The result of a missed breakfast can be some or all of the following:

 - Decreased work productivity

- Tiredness, irritability and restlessness

- Low blood sugar level

 -Longer reaction time

- Lack of alertness

- Short attention span

 Do you want to experience all of the above at work or school ?  Definitely not. You don’t want to go through the day behaving like a grouch, thereby making your family and colleagues miserable as well.

 A well balanced breakfast can boost your energy, make you more alert, give you a sense of well-being and put you in better control of your emotions.

We may have the following excuses for avoiding breakfast.  

 I have no time – Well, make it a point to go to bed early and get up early.

 I am not hungry - Well, you shouldn’t have stuffed yourself the previous night. The worst thing you can do is to go to bed after a heavy meal. Make it a point to have something light at dinner.

 I will put on weight – That’s baloney ! A normal breakfast of skimmed milk, cereal and fruit will not make you fat. On the other hand, by skipping breakfast, by mid morning, to satisfy your hunger, you may grab something or the other loaded with fats and calories and over a period of time, end up adding inches to your waistline or wherever.

 Health experts maintain that eating the right combination of foods at breakfast increases mental and physical performance and reduces body weight. So, the time for resolutions is around the corner and if you are one of those breakfast skippers, do yourself a good turn in 2010 and start eating breakfast

 So in our own interest, we should make time to eat breakfast every morning.
